Assam(Asom, Axom) is a state of large geographical and cultural diversity, often a surprise for tourists who are expecting to find a state mostly known for it’s tea plantations. 

Dominated by the mighty Brahmaputra River, the state of Assam is the gateway to the northeastern part of India. This beautiful land finds its reference in the great Hindu epic Mahabharata as "Pragiyotisha" and "Kamarupa" in the first millennium. Assam gets its name from the Ahom kingdom, which flourished from 1228 to 1826. It became a British province after 1838 and the Indian state after 1947 which came to be known as Assam. Endowed with lush greenery, Assam India is renowned for Assam tea, silk, petroleum resources and rich flora and fauna, the world famous one horned rhinoceros and other rare species of wildlife on the verge of extinction. The dense forests of Assam are home to numerous animals and birds and one of the last wild habitats for the Asian elephants.

Tourist Attractions Assam

Kaziranga National Park, Manas National Park, Kamakhya Devi Temple, Nabagraha Temple, Umananda Temple, Basisthashram, Madan Kamdev, Haflong Poa-Mecca, Da-Parbatia, Agnigarh are the major tourist attractions in Assam. There are many popular Assam travel destination circuits like Guwahati-Shillong-Guwahati, Guwahati-Kaziranga-Guwahati, Guwahati-Sibsagar-Jorhat-Majuli-Guwahati, Guwahati-Manas-Guwahati etc.

Wildlife Tourism

Assam is known for it's wildlife. There are five National Parks in Assam which are Kaziranga, Manas, Orang, Nameri & Dibru-Saikhowa. There are also many wildlife and bird sanctuaries here.

Kaziranga is a World Heritage Site. It is famous worldwide for it's hundred year old conservation history. It was awarded the best tourist friendly park in our country. It is the home of the world famous one-horn rhinoceros and a large variety of buffalo, elephant, tiger, etc.

Manas, with an area of about 500 sq. kms was declared a National Park in 1990. It is famous for its Tiger Project, migratory birds, elephant , buffalo and Golden Langurs etc.

Nameri was declared a National Park in 1988. The Dibru Saikhowa and Bhalukpong in Sonitpur district are famous for wild life and eco-tourism and is a very popular destination for the nature lovers.

Orang is the oldest game reserve of the State just on the northern bank of river Brahmaputra with an area of 78.80 sq. kms.. It is important breeding ground for a variety of fishes.

Dibru Saikhowa is a National Park as well as a Biosphere Reserve having an area of 340 sq. kms. in Tinsukia district. It offers enormous potential for tourism related activities.

Tea & Golf Tourism

People all over the world know Assam as the land of 'two leaves and a bud'. With more than 85O tea estates and 25000 small tea gardens spanning over thousands of acres of land, Assam offers exciting opportunities to see & experience the beautiful ambience of the tea garden way of life.

October to April is considered the best time to visit Assam as these winter months are quite pleasant and sunny.

Travel to Assam by Rail: A convenient Indian Railways network runs through out the state connecting major Indian cities with Assam. There are train services from Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Cochin and Trivandrum.
